Waffling for Waffles

Making Sweet, Salty, and Spicy Waffles for National Waffle Day

Monday can be a drag, especially right now, but we know how to cheer you up. Waffles! On this #NationalWaffleDay, we’ve got some recipes that work for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Today celebrates the patent of the waffle iron by Cornelius Swarthout 151 years ago on August 24th. And rumor has it that the pilgrims brought waffles on to the Mayflower after a quick stop in the Netherlands before sailing to America.

Our friend the waffle is pretty versatile, taking on chicken, bacon, sausage, and chipped beef or syrup, fruit, powered sugar, and ice cream. Waffle is even a verb, meaning “failure to make up one’s mind”. Maybe that’s because we can’t decide on how we want to eat them…

Cinnamon Roll Waffle Skewers

This is an inexpensive, fun way to eat our waffles whether it’s for breakfast or dessert!

  • 1 can (7.3 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing
  • 16 small wooden skewers
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate hazelnut spread
  • 2 tablespoons strawberry preserves or jam
  • 2 teaspoons assorted candy sprinkles

Heat waffle maker. Lightly spray with cooking spray. Separate dough from 1 can (7.3 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing into 8 rolls; set icing aside. Place 1 or 2 rolls on heated waffle maker; close. Bake about 2 minutes. Carefully remove from waffle maker. Repeat with remaining rolls. Cut waffles in half. Carefully insert 1 small wooden skewer into each waffle half.

Serve waffle dippers warm with included cinnamon roll icing, 2 tablespoons chocolate hazelnut spread (#420899), 2 tablespoons strawberry preserves or jam (#421371) and 2 teaspoons assorted candy sprinkles (#126573) for dipping.
