When Is National Waffle Day?

National Waffle Day celebrates the patent of the waffle iron by Cornelius Swarthout over 150 years ago on August 24th. Rumor has it that waffles are as foundational to our country as Plymouth Rock. The pilgrims brought waffles onto the Mayflower after a quick stop in the Netherlands before sailing to America.

National Waffle Day Recipes: Sweet, Savory and Spicy Waffle Ideas

Our friend the waffle is pretty versatile, taking on the flavor profile of whatever you add to the mix. We usually see waffles as a sweet breakfast paired with syrup, fruit, powdered sugar or ice cream. Yet, waffles can just as easily be a savory dish with chicken, bacon, sausage or chipped beef.

“Waffle” is also a verb meaning “failure to make up one’s mind.” Maybe that’s because we can’t decide on how we want to eat them. Whether you’re hankering for sweet, savory, buttery or spicy, we have you covered. On this #NationalWaffleDay, we’ve got some recipes that work for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Cinnamon Roll Waffle Skewers

Customers will love this delicious grab-and-go offering for corporate events or hotel brunch buffets. Our cinnamon roll waffle skewers are inexpensive, fun and a great way to celebrate the waffle — perfect for breakfast or dessert!

Ingredients

  • 1 can (7.3 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing
  • 16 small wooden skewers
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate hazelnut spread
  • 2 tablespoons strawberry preserves or jam
  • 2 teaspoons assorted candy sprinkles

Directions

Heat your waffle maker, then lightly spray it with cooking spray. Separate dough from one can of (7.3 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing into eight rolls, setting the icing aside. Place one or two rolls on the heated waffle maker and close. Bake for about two minutes. Carefully remove the dough from the waffle maker. Repeat with all remaining rolls. Cut each waffle in half. Carefully insert one small wooden skewer into each waffle half.

Serve your warm waffle skewers with included cinnamon roll icing, plus 2 tablespoons chocolate hazelnut spread (#420899), 2 tablespoons strawberry preserves or jam (#421371) and 2 teaspoons assorted candy sprinkles (#126573) for dipping.

Chicken & Waffles

Fluffy waffles, crispy fried chicken, plus a drizzle of hot honey — National Waffle Day just got a whole lot better. Chicken and waffles is an iconic southern dish that’s easy to adapt to your tastes. Make this dish stand out with Hot Honey, Whipped Tabasco-Honey Butter or Maple-Vanilla-Bourbon Syrup.

Directions

Using General Mills Complete Pancake Mix (#126098), whip up some waffle batter according to the directions and heat up the waffle iron. Add some piping hot Tyson® Fully Cooked Honey Stung® Fried Chicken (#251319) and choose one of the following toppings — or go crazy and use them all.

Hot Honey

Serve up some Nashville style with a Hot Honey drizzle. Mix the honey and hot sauce together for chicken and waffles with a sweet and spicy flair.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Natural American Foods® Honey (#300221)
  • 3 tbsp. hot sauce such as RedHot® (#611518)

Whipped Tabasco-Honey Butter

Whipped butter has a soft and airy texture, filling every waffle pocket with the sweet and spicy flavor of this tabasco-honey recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 oz. Natural American Foods® Honey
  • 4 dashes Texas Pete® hot sauce (#611542)

Directions

Place butter, honey and hot sauce in a mixer. Mix using the paddle until you have soft peaks. Set butter off to the side until ready to use.

Maple-Vanilla-Bourbon Syrup

Adding bourbon to your maple syrup gives this sticky, sweet topping a more complex flavor. The enhanced notes of vanilla, caramel and toasted nuts set this recipe apart.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups maple syrup (#710625)
  • 2 tsp. bourbon
  • 1⁄2 tsp. pure vanilla extract (#360353)

Directions

Place syrup, bourbon and vanilla extract into a small mixing bowl, and whisk. Place your mixed ingredients in a small pot on low heat to warm.

Savory Cinnamon Roll Waffles

While your mind may automatically pair cinnamon roll waffles with sweet toppings like whipped cream or syrup, these mouthwatering waffles combine beautifully with savory toppings of pulled pork, caramelized onions and coleslaw.

Ingredients

Directions

Thaw dough covered, either at room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes until flexible or overnight under refrigeration. Place four biscuits (with space between) on a lightly greased waffle iron, preheated to 325°F. Griddle for two to three minutes or until golden brown. Spread 2 tablespoons of warmed pulled pork evenly on each cinnamon roll waffle. Layer on 2 tablespoons of onions and coleslaw. Finish with 1 tablespoon of maple syrup and serve immediately.
