June 21st is National Smoothie Day, so it is only appropriate to celebrate one of the most refreshing summer drinks. Smoothies can be sweet, tart, thick, thin, a nourishing snack or a delicious dessert. It is very simple to achieve these different preferences with this simple smoothie recipe. Learn how to make any kind of smoothie in 4 easy steps.

Step 1

Choose the Fruits and Veggies

It is recommended to consume 2 servings of fruit and 3 servings of vegetables each day, so keep that in mind while scooping the fruits and veggies into the blender. Do not fear using vegetables in a fruit smoothie. Some vegetables have more aggressive flavors than others. While kale will be a more noticeable vegetable in the smoothie than spinach, both are nutritious and great options. If the desired effect is a cold, refreshing, thick smoothie, use Dole Frozen Fruit. The frozen fruit will not water down the smoothie like ice will.

Step 2

Choose a Liquid Base

To make a vegan or dairy free smoothie, choose Silk Soymilk or almond milk. To cut some calories, stick with an unsweetened, low-fat liquid. While fruit juices could enhance the flavor of the smoothie, they would be adding sugar to an already sweetened smoothie. Fruits contain a natural sugar called fructose. If using a fruit juice, ensure it does not have added sugars and is 100% juice, like Ocean Spray Orange Juice. If a sweetened smoothie is the desired result, do not fear the juices or sweetened milks. Dairy milk is also a great option.

Step 3

Choose a Yogurt

If skipping this step, add a little more liquid to help the frozen fruit blend. The yogurt will give the smoothie a thicker, creamier, and more milkshake-like consistency. Chobani Greek Yogurt will create a tart flavor and add more protein. The protein will help the smoothie be more filling. Other yogurts work well, but be mindful of the amount of fat and added sugar in the yogurt. To make the smoothie vegan and dairy free, substitute with coconut or soy yogurt. To make the smoothie a delicious dessert, consider adding a scoop of Blue Bunny Vanilla Ice Cream

Step 4

Protein and Omega 3s (optional)

Don’t be hesitant to add other nutritious things to the smoothie. Add a scoop of a favorite protein powder, a teaspoon of chia seeds, a tablespoon of Reece’s All Natural Peanut Butter, almonds, raw oats, or anything that is fortifying. If using some of these additions, consider the smoothie being a meal substitute. This will make a fantastic breakfast that is portable, quick, filling, and delicious.

There is never a bad time for a smoothie. They are nutritious, delicious, and there will be a smoothie that everybody likes. Grab a favorite glass, to-go cup, or just put a straw in the blender, and enjoy.
